How to Hire a Postpartum Doula or Night Nanny

Parent 101 begins the moment you step through the threshold of the door to your home. Maybe you’ve read books, taken classes, and feel you have it all together until that very moment. Maybe you’re a planner and are mapping out your ideal post-baby experience. Maybe you know that having ample sleep and help around your home will be vital to your mental health and general wellbeing.

As a postpartum expert, I’ve learned a lot along the way including knowing what to look for in locating and hiring your chosen support structure. Anyone can call themselves a postpartum care provider, which makes your job as a new parent that much more difficult! Below are my top 10 things you may want to ask yourself as you work toward hiring your postpartum support team.

  1. Does the individual have a positive reputation in the community?

  2. Does the individual have current certifications for being a postpartum provider?

  3. Does the individual have current CPR/First aid training?

  4. Does the individual have a clear background check?

  5. Does the individual meet your chosen vaccination/health specifications?

  6. Has the individual been through training specific to newborn care?

  7. Does the individual have professional liability insurance as well as maintain current membership to their certifying organization?

  8. Does the individual have standards of accountability through a contract so you know what to expect and how the business operates?

  9. Does the individual have the availability you desire?

  10. Does the individual have a plan for sickness or unavailability other than just not showing up?
