Emotional Support Coffee

My husband and I joke about my emotional support coffee all of the time. I make it and the vast majority of the time it sits and gets cold. I re-heat it and forget about it again and again until I finally pour it into the sink, place the mug in the dishwasher and vow next time I’ll remember to drink every last sip.

Sometimes security and safety comes in the most unassuming packages. A blanket from your past, an old photo, or even a phone call from a dear friend. For me, it’s that silly cup of coffee that I let sit day after day.

Reflecting on life as a doula, I can’t help but think about the similarities to that morning ritual of mine. As doulas, we pour into clients cups with words of compassion and care. We wrap them in knowledge and support. We also don’t mind sitting and just being present for whatever might be needed at any point in their journey.

Sometimes it’s not about doing, but instead about being.

Being present.

Being purposeful.

Being supportive.

My emotional support coffee will continue to be a long running joke between my family and I, but as a doula, I’ll forever be honored to be that same security and safety to every family I have the honor of serving through their parenting journey.
